I had the amazing opportunity to attend the 27th Biennial Coastal and Estuarine Research Federation (CERF) Conference in Portland, Oregon, as a part of the Rising TIDES (Toward an Inclusive, Diverse, and Enriched Society) program.
Rising TIDES aims to promote opportunities for individuals from groups underrepresented in CERF disciplines and professions, fostering a culture that actively engages and leverages diversity. As a scientific society, CERF values differences in social identity, discipline, career path, and life experience. It reflects CERF's commitment to full organizational support in broadening participation and ensuring that coastal and estuarine science benefits from the richness of diverse backgrounds and viewpoints.
I had the honor of receiving the Best Graduate Student Oral Presentation award for my talk, “Angler-Sea Turtle Dynamics on the Alabama Coast.” This recognition added a special layer to my experience, affirming the impact of my research and its significance within the coastal and estuarine science community.
Presenting my findings to fellow scientists, researchers, and enthusiasts at CERF 2023 was a highlight of the conference. The award not only acknowledges the dedication and effort invested in my research but also underscores the importance of exploring the intricate dynamics of coastal ecosystems. I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the collective knowledge and dialogue surrounding coastal and estuarine science.
This achievement wouldn't have been possible without the supportive and engaging atmosphere fostered by CERF and the Rising TIDES program. It reflects the commitment of the scientific community to recognizing and celebrating excellence across diverse perspectives.
The resounding theme throughout the event was a call to action. I left CERF 2023 invigorated and inspired, carrying with me not just new knowledge but a renewed commitment to translating science into impactful change. The urgency to protect and preserve our coasts was clear, fostering a shared dedication to advocate for evidence-based policies and community engagement.
I extend my gratitude to CERF, Rising TIDES, and all conference participants for making CERF 2023 an unforgettable experience, marked by shared passion, camaraderie, and the pursuit of impactful research.
